Major Grammar & Prosody Works

c. 300 BCE - 100 CE

Tolkāppiyam

Grammar

Foundation of Tamil grammar

The oldest surviving and most authoritative Tamil grammar. It establishes the five-fold grammar (ஐந்திலக்கணம்) including Eluttu, Col, Poruḷ, Yappu (Prosody), and Aṇi. It is largely indigenous with minimal external influence.

11th Century CE

Vīracōḻiyam

Grammar & Prosody

Strong Sanskrit influence begins

Written by Buddhist scholar Puttamittiraṉ during the Chola period. First major grammar to systematically incorporate Sanskrit grammatical structures, terminology (kāraka, sandhi, dhātu, etc.), and poetics while describing Tamil. Contains a dedicated Yāppatikāram (Prosody chapter).

11th - 12th Century CE

Yapparuṅkalam & Yapparuṅkalakkārikai

Prosody (Yappu)

Specialized Yappu works

Authored by Jain scholar Amitasāgara. Dedicated treatises on Tamil prosody (Yappu). They represent the peak of indigenous Tamil metrical theory with some later Sanskrit influences in structure.

12th Century CE

Taṇṭiyalaṅkāram

Poetics

Sanskrit literary theory

Tamil adaptation of Sanskrit Daṇḍin's Kāvyādarśa. Focuses on alaṅkāra (rhetoric and figures of speech). Reflects growing Sanskrit literary influence during the Chola period.

Early 13th Century CE

Nannūl

Grammar

Most influential classical grammar

Authored by Pavaṇandi Munivar. The most widely used Tamil grammar after Tolkāppiyam. Clear five-fold structure with an excellent Yāppatikāram section. Less Sanskritized than Vīracōḻiyam and more accessible.

Influence & Comparative Context

Medieval Period (600 - 1300 CE)

Sanskrit Chandas Influence on Tamil Yappu

Influence & Comparison

Limited but significant influence

From around 600 CE, Sanskrit prosody (Chandas) began influencing Tamil Yappu. Key adoptions include syllable counting (akṣara), mora (mātrā), fixed line lengths, and metres like viruttam (from vṛtta). However, the core acai-based system remained uniquely Tamil and indigenous.

Classical Period

Tamil Yappu vs Sanskrit Chandas, Latin & Greek Prosody

Comparison

Unique Dravidian metrical system

Tamil Yappu uses a unique acai (metreme) system (nēr & nirai). Sanskrit Chandas is based on akṣara + gaṇa. Latin and Greek prosody are quantitative (long/short syllables) and heavily influenced each other. Tamil prosody developed independently with its own rhythmic logic and toṭai (alliteration) emphasis.
